Dearest Cecilia,

My love, my heart, I miss you more than words can say. I think of you constantly, reminiscing on our last night together. I can’t wait until I see you again. You are the reason I endure this hell-hole. You are the only thing that gives me the courage to carry on.

Stay safe my darling, stay safe.

Your loving Joe.

Who was Cecilia, and who was Joe – her husband, fiancé, sweetheart? The letter was dated 1943, so maybe Joe was on the front line or part of the war effort.

A quick scan of some of the others showed they were all love letters, organised in date order, and I vowed to read them when I had time. Then my intention was caught by a photograph of a laughing, dark-haired woman. She was looking past the camera, her eyes on something beyond the lens, and she was half-turned away, as if she’d been going somewhere and someone had called her back to capture the moment. Joe maybe? She wore a below-the-knee dress with a full skirt, and belted at the waist. The material was blowing against her legs and her curled shoulder-length hair was lifted by the breeze. She looked happy.

She looked like she was in love.

I was about to replace everything when a piece of dark blue fabric caught my eye. I reached for it, the velvet soft under my fingers, and gently drew out a small pouch with a drawstring top. Something small and solid was inside. With great care I opened the top of the pouch, shook out its contents, and gasped when I saw what lay in my hand.

A ring! A gold band with a centre diamond and a sapphire either side, glittered as the morning light brought it to sparkling life. I picked it up and turned it this way and that, marvelling as the stones shone. The gold was pristine, not a single scratch, and no inscription. Without thinking, I slipped it on my ring finger. It fitted as though it had been made for me.

I stretched out my hand, admiring the way it looked on my finger, and it was with reluctance that I took it off, folded it in its velvet shroud, and placed it back in the box. I got to my feet, clutching the metal box, and called to the dog.

Then something stopped me in my tracks.

A breath on my neck, as though someone peered over my shoulder to get a better look, a soft sigh.

One again, I had the feeling of someone being here with me. Millie danced back, her eyes bright, her tail wagging, and this time I didn’t feel alarmed, but peaceful, and a small sense of satisfaction swept through me, as though the box had wanted to be found.
