Chapter Fifteen

Brash and Madison both met with the Lewis family. Their friends, the Glenwoods, had come over, as well, so the house was full. The kids were out on the deck, willing their phones to ring, while Brash did his best to keep everyone calm.

“I told them it probably won’t do any good to call the police yet,” Tina Lewis said. “It’s Spring Break, and kids will be kids, they’ll say. It’s not fair, but we both know that’s how it is.”

“Unfortunately, I think you’re right,” Brash agreed. “Have you called Patty’s mom?”

“Not yet,” Tina admitted. “I’m hoping she’ll still show up, and her mom will be worried for nothing. I’ve only met her once, during freshmen orientation when our girls were assigned as roommates, but she seemed a little… high strung. That’s a long way for her to drive when she’s hysterical.”

“We could probably arrange for an escort,” Brash thought aloud. “I have a buddy who’s on the sheriff’s department in Angelina County.”

“But then they would coordinate with the Galveston County Sheriff, and I thought we weren’t calling them in yet,” Madison pointed out.

“True.”

“Mom! Dad! I just got a message!” Lindsey yelled, racing into the house. She was in such a rush, she almost ran into the door. Her breath came in gulps. “Patty isn’t just missing. She’s been kidnapped!” the young woman wailed.

“Kidnapped?” Brenda Glenwood gasped.

“What kind of message?” Neal Lewis asked his daughter. “Let me see it. Let Mr. deCordova see it!” He motioned for Brash to go first.

“It came from Patty’s phone,” Lindsey explained. Her hands shook so hard, she almost dropped the phone as she transferred the device to Brash.

It was the same photo sent to Samuel Roberts. The digital quality was somewhat better than the printed copy had been, but it still lacked much to be desired. He could make out the grassy area behind her and what looked like a poorly constructed shelter, for lack of a better word. It was more like a couple of boards with a sheet of warped plywood. At least, that was his best guess. Again, the lighting and the quality were terrible.

There was a piece of paper propped up against her.

‘No cops,’ it said, in the same block lettering as the one sent to her father.

Brash airdropped the photo to himself and to Madison and handed the device over to Neal Lewis.

“What should we do?” the man asked frantically.

“For now, let’s do as they say. No police. If they make contact again, let me know immediately, even if it’s in the middle of the night,” Brash instructed.

“She has to stay out there another night?” Lindsey shrieked. “She must be terrified!”

“Let’s hope I figure out where she is before that. Lindsey, can we talk for a minute? I need to ask you some questions.”

“In here?” she asked nervously.

“Of course, unless there’s a reason you’d like to speak to me in private.” There was a question in his eyes.

“No, of course not. I—I’d rather my parents be here.”

“As would I.
