Chapter Seventeen
This friend of Claireâs was a hoot. Chip could hardly keep up with her. When she wasnât asking questions, she was filling the silence with stories from the past, mostly about Claire.
It took them half an hour just to walk through the lobby. Chip was having a great time, but he thought Claire seemed tense.
When Margie got distracted by a conversation with two passing guests, Chip stepped aside with Claire. âIs everything okay?â
Claire smiled. âYes, of course. Why?â
âYou seemâ¦â Chip shrugged. âNot yourself. We donât have to continue the tour. Iâm sure youâre busy.â
âNo, itâs not that.â Claireâs eyes lingered on him, searching.
Searching for what? Words? Studying him? He didnât know. Chip lost his breath for a moment. Claire had been on his mind constantly since their outing the night before. He felt positively bewitched by her.
At that moment, he had two simultaneous thoughts: how lucky he was to have her attention again, and what a mess it would be to fall in love with his boss.
He cleared his throat. âPlease, tell me. Iâm here to help.â
A smile flashed on her face, then quickly faded. âItâs ââ
âTheyâre loving their stay!â Margie said triumphantly, rejoining the conversation.
âEr â who is?â Claire asked.
âThat couple I just talked to,â said Margie. âThey just got married a few months ago and decided to make the trip as a little getaway. So sweet!â
Chip smiled. âThatâs nice to hear.â
âWhere were we?â asked Margie, beaming.
At Margieâs prompting, Chip pointed out a few aspects of the lobby and explained the challenges of maintaining the Art Deco appearance. Margie was nodding enthusiastically and Chip suddenly realized he might be making a fool of himself.
âIâm sorry,â he said to Margie. âYouâve already heard about the hotel, havenât you?â
She smiled and waved a hand. âJust a bit, and it was always quite brief.â Margie looked around, admiring the chandelier above them. âSteve was a friend of mine, but we usually met over in Friday Harbor. Howâs he doing?â
âHeâs good. I just talked to him a few weeks ago.â Chip felt a pang of shame. The last time heâd spoken to Steve, he was still angry about Claire, still convinced that she would be the bane of his existence. How wrong heâd been.
Margie walked toward one of the windows overlooking the water. âThe first time that Hank brought me to Orcas Island, Steve accused me of stealing from him.â
Chip cocked his head to the side. âStealing?â
âWell, he called that little bay out there Sunset Cove, because of the beautiful sunsets you can catch behind the mountain. And I thought that was just wonderful, and I told him that my wedding venue was named Saltwater Cove.â
âAh.â Chip smiled. âI can see where this is going.â
âMhm,â Margie said with a nod. âSteve said that he couldnât believe I had the audacity to come to his hotel and steal one of his names. I was mortified, and I apologized several times, at one point promising to change the name of my business and everything.â
Chip laughed.
