Dia can hardly walk when we get out of the Phantom. Her body is dripping with sweat and her breathing comes out in ragged waves. Maeve looks slightly better off, but the strain of the fight is clear on her as well. Viviana orders them both to their rooms for the remainder of the journey.

“I-I’m fine,” Dia stammers out. “It’s been… been a while since I hard to push that hard. I’ll be okay in a few hours.”

“Okay,” I say softly, doing my best to help her stay upright. “I will help you to your room.”

“Thank you,” she says, leaning on me as we walk.

She is very dense—literally. Between her cybernetics and sheer muscle mass, she is heavy. I support almost her full weight as I help her back to her room. If not for my own augmented strength, I am not sure I could support her like this. The door to her room hisses open, greeting us with a most surprising sight: a veritable mountain of varied stuffed animals.

“Cute.” It’s hard to imagine the woman I just saw mercilessly kill having a bed full of stuffed animals, from wolves to cats, to rabbits and even dragons. “Very cute.”

“Thanks,” she says, getting off me and stumbling her way over to the bed. She collapses with a loud thunk.

“Are you sure you are okay, Dia?” I ask. “You were not like this after our fight or any of the other duels.”

“Fianna’s regulations,” she says. “A real fight has significantly more neural feedback, and those weren’t pirates in junk. I’m…” She turns over to look at me. “Just a lot of adrenaline, for a lot of reasons.”

“Are you upset that I got into the cockpit with you?” I fold my arms over my chest, fighting the urge to glare.

“Annoyed is a better word,” she says, shivering on the bed. “You almost died.”

“But I did not,” I tell her. “You protected me.”

“I wouldn’t have needed to protect you like that, if you had stayed on the ship,” she says. She tries to peel off her flightsuit, but her fingers won’t work properly.

I walk over to her, shooing her hands away so that I can do it for her. “I needed to ensure you would survive.” Slowly, I remove her suit layers, kissing her neck and chest. “Your fault for not promising to come back.”

“I can’t make that kind of promise, Princess,” she says, leaning into my kisses. “I’m not the kind of girl to make stupid promises I can’t keep.”

She’s right, and I know that. “That is true,” I say softly. “I know that—I appreciate it even. It was a panic moment. Those mercenaries are like ghosts. No one knows where they come from, but I have not heard of a single person surviving an encounter with them.”

She tries to lift her hand; it shakes from the effort and falls limply onto the bed. “Fuck. I forgot how intense post-sortie drop could be. We can talk about this later… sorry.”

“Of course,” I say, kissing along her collarbone.
