Chapter 15
Aubrey had only seen pictures of the woman before. Wedding pictures of the woman standing in front of them now with Zoey and Scarlettâs father, Jean Rowlett.
But Aubrey knew all about Bridgett Rowlett. The woman, who was a mere fifteen years older than she was, had been the cause of her best friendsâ parentsâ divorce.
Shortly before Zoey and Scarlettâs fatherâs death of cancer two years ago, Bridgett had divorced Jean Rowlett, owner of R&R Enterprises, a company whose power and reach rivaled that of one of her own fatherâs businesses.
When Bridgett found out about her ex-husbandâs death, sheâd tried everything she could to get her hands on the manâs remaining money. But their father had changed his will after the divorce and the sisters had spent some of their inheritance on helping out with the camp.
The sisters had decided to use it to build a few more cabins, which had boosted the business greatly.
Bridgett narrowed her eyes. âDo I know you?â It was the slight smile on the womanâs lips that had Aubreyâs temper growing.
âDonât play games with me,â Aubrey hissed. She stormed across the room towards the woman.
How the hell had her father and Bridgett met in the first place? Was she working for her father?
Had Bridgett learned about Aubrey being Zoey and Scarlettâs friend and then hunted down her father in hopes of getting her hands on his money like she had Jean Rowlettâs?
Zoey had informed her that Bridgett had gotten a lot of their fatherâs money in the divorce, but the last sheâd heard, the woman had blown through it. The last the friends had heard of Bridgett, she had been working as a dancer in Vegas.
How long had she been in New York?
Aubrey watched Bridgett lay her hands, which had extremely long manicured fingernails painted in a hot pink, on her fatherâs shoulders, as if they belonged there.
âIâm best friends with Zoey and Scarlett Rowlett,â Aubrey answered as she crossed her arms over her chest.
She watched the womanâs reaction and noticed the lack of surprise in her eyes.
âOh, thatâs wonderful.â Bridgett smiled, and Aubrey noticed that her lips matched the color of her nails. She must have known that her father had deemed pink as the only color a woman should ever wear. It was the reason sheâd only had the color in her wardrobe growing up. The reason she hated it to this very day. No daughter of Harold Smith was going to be anything less than feminine.
âHarold, dear, those are my stepdaughters I was telling you about.â Bridgett turned to Aubreyâs father. âI miss them so. They were such wonderful young ladies.â Bridgett sighed and rested her hand over her heart. Her eyes returned to Aubreyâs and she noticed a glimmer of anger hidden them. Then her eyes turned to Aiden, and Aubrey saw interest flash behind the womanâs eyes briefly before she turned back to Harold. âBut, sadly, after their father passed, they turned on me. They were hungry for their fatherâs wealth and stole every last dime he gave me.
