Popular lesbian romance writer Bryce Kaylin dabbed perspiration from her brow as she stepped into the long line waiting to check in at the Royal Suites Plaza Hotel. Whoâs hare-brained idea was it anyway to have the Romance Writers Conference in Dallas in the middle of summer?
At ninety-eight degrees it was literally hotter than blue blazes. A trickle of sweat raced between her breasts. The temperature had been a very pleasant twenty degrees cooler when sheâd departed her Minneapolis suburb of Richfield. She dabbed again at her damp forehead as she stepped up to the counter and faced an African-American woman with a wide welcoming smile.
âGood evening, Maâam, how can I help you?â
âI have a reservation. Kaitlyn Bryce.â
Sherise, as her name tag read, tapped beautiful French tipped nails on the keyboard. âHere we go.â Within seconds she reached down and pulled a sheet off the printer. âOh, I see you were updated to a late arrival. I hope your delays havenât ruined any of your scheduled trip.â She slid the paper across the counter pointing out the signature line.
âWell, Iâm here,â Kaitlyn said with exhaustion. âAlthough, Iâm sure I missed the âget acquaintedâ cocktail party.â
Sherise narrowed an eye. âIf youâre with the writers conference, I believe theyâre still tipping them back in the Kennedy room.â
Kaitlyn scratched her signature.
âI can hold your suitcase if you want to pop in now. Iâm here until eleven.â
Kaitlyn looked down at her rumpled blouse and Capri pants with a frown. There was someone she was hoping to catch up with before tomorrow. âThat would be lovely. I think Iâll take you up on your offer.â She gave a tired smile.
Stepping away from the check-in desk Kaitlynâs eyes fell on a most attractive androgynous creature seated at the bar across the large lobby. The stranger quickly averted her gaze and turned back to the counter. Kaitlyn gave a sideways glance as she passed the bar on her way to the cocktail party. Definitely attractive.
