Chapter 25

For the first few months in London, Emily’s mood seemed to match the weather: bright and hopeful at first, then getting gradually darker and colder as summer came to an end and autumn took over. Her social life, which had been fairly quiet when she was in Oxford, had faded to non-existent.

If it weren’t for the waitressing job she’d found a couple of weeks after she arrived, she was sure she’d hardly ever speak to anyone. The Italian restaurant was a pleasant enough place to work. It was a small, family-owned operation, without a lot of drama. The perfect setup for Emily. It also meant she had her mornings free to write, which suited her well.

The book launch happened in October. If she was honest, Emily found it fairly underwhelming. She wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting, but other than a few congratulatory phone calls and messages, it was just a flurry of activity on social media. It meant she had to be social with strangers on the internet. Definitely not her favourite thing.

It should have been a momentous day, one she’d been dreaming about for years, but it fell flat somehow. The high point of the day was when Jack called to congratulate her. Unfortunately it was quickly followed by the low point of her day.

She was so touched that he called, and after not seeing him for over two months it was a thrill to hear his voice. They spent a few minutes chatting – he was his usual cheerful self and she was her usual mumbling nervous self.

Ending the call was the low point of her day. Tears automatically filled her eyes as she realised how much she missed him. She’d been trying so hard to put him out of her mind, but that brief phone call set her back. The following weeks were difficult. She thought about him constantly. On the phone he’d asked when she’d be back to Oxford for a visit. She’d told him soon, and she was tempted. It wouldn’t do her any good, though. The couple of times she went home to see her mum, she kept the visits quiet.

Josie turned up in London fairly regularly, either because she had an audition in the city or just for a night or weekend away. Their friendship was as strong as ever.

Those first few months in London dragged so slowly, but eventually Christmas came around and Emily packed up some things for a few days with her mum back in Oxford.

***

She met up with Josie on Christmas Eve. Josie had already mentioned that Jack had to work in the morning, so that was when Emily suggested they meet. She had the feeling that spending time with Josie and Jack together could ruin the whole Christmas period for her and was keen to avoid it.

They met in the city centre. Josie had been doing her last-minute shopping and arrived at the café with an armful of bags. Emily had arrived a few moments before her and was taking her coat off.
