Chapter 25 – The Enemy Escapes

Sparrow

They had missed their quarry…again! They’d tracked all three shuttles to their destination orbitals and then watched all outbound departures from those orbitals carefully, either blocking them from leaving or having the system patrol ‘routinely’ stop them on their way out of the system and search them for anyone not on the crew manifest.

But they hadn’t accounted fully for how crafty their prey would be. It took even Hayley Uvalde a while to discover that the enemy agents had arrived at the cargo orbital but then taken a short shuttle hop back down to the surface of the planet’s southern hemisphere, and then from there had caught a shuttle to a different orbital entirely! There, they lost their trail, and it was too late to recall any of the ships leaving the system, assuming they hadn’t hopped to a third orbital after that one!

Wolf was angry. It was the first time Sparrow had seen the large, hard man show any extreme emotion. And the way he showed it, by speaking softly through his teeth, scared her more than if he had yelled and thrown things.

“Boss, I’m sure we can track them—” she tried to argue, but he cut her off, causing even Lola to shy away while Victoria whimpered softly.

“No! We missed them here, but we know where they are going. We’ll commandeer a fast Navy courier back to Koratas and beat them there.” He turned to Uvalde. “You, Lieutenant, are in this whether you like it or not. You will accompany us back to the capital.” With that, he turned and stalked off, probably to go inform the Navy commandant that she would be lending them her fastest courier ship immediately.

Sparrow looked at Uvalde, who had turned stark white. “Don’t worry, chica,” she said with a forced smile. “He’s not all that bad once you get to know him.” Neither woman believed the lie.

An hour later, on board the courier ship that was thrusting away from its orbital, Uvalde turned to Sparrow from the seat next to her; Wolf was up in the cockpit ‘motivating’ the pilot, so they were momentarily alone in the very small passenger area. “Why do you do what you do?” Hayley asked timidly.

The question surprised Sparrow, and she looked up at the younger woman, bringing her eyes back into focus and dismissing the window she’d had opened on her implant. “What do you mean?” she asked cautiously.

The Naval Intelligence officer squirmed a little in her seat but didn’t break eye contact. “My entire adult life—not that it’s been all that long—I’ve sat behind a desk and gathered intelligence. I’ve never even been out in the field. Intellectually, I knew that intelligence would be used by someone, possibly to kill someone else. I’ve always comforted myself that I was doing it to help my star nation, but it still bothers me sometimes. And you…you’re out there…” she trailed off and looked away.

“I’m out there actually killing the enemies of Koratas,” Sparrow finished for her with a wan smile.
