Chapter 16

Yikes. No, thank you. Tension tightened at my temples. When I’d first joined the Vampire Games cast, I’d attended a gathering that featured Truth or Dare. The whole night had devolved so rapidly after the first dare that it was the last party I’d gone to. I shook my head, and my tiredness was a legit excuse without telling them my business. “I’m out. Headed to bed.”

“Are you sure?” Becca asked.

“Too tired.” I waved off Becca’s protests and went into the front bedroom, getting into pajamas and curling up under the covers.

Troy came in. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah. You can play.”

“I’d rather hang with you.” He grabbed his duffle and headed to the shower, returning in navy flannel pajamas.

A tap sounded on the door, and he opened it for Becca. “She doesn’t want to play.” His voice was firm.

“I know.” Becca came on in.

“Then goodnight,” Troy said.

I didn’t need him to answer for me, but I didn’t hate that he was taking my side. “Troy, it’s okay. Do you mind giving us a minute?”

Troy left the room without saying anything. Becca rolled her eyes at his back and kept walking. “Guys can be such…” She shrugged.

I sat up in the bed crisscross style and shoved my pillow behind me. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking. Truth or Dare was not a great idea. Not without beer anyway.” Becca looked at her feet and then back up. “I should have asked if you were okay with the sleeping arrangements and all. I can help you set up the couch or…”

That was nice of her. A day late, but thoughtful. I should have made more of an effort to get to know her over the semester. “I’m good. You okay? I can help you with the couch, or you can stay in here.”

“Nah. Jackson’s superhot.” Becca chewed on her lip. “But he’s really digging all this outdoorsy-ness, you know?”

“Seems to be his thing.”

Becca groaned. She was clearly pondering the fundamental relationship question of how much a couple needed to have in common. I hadn’t seen any deal breakers. Jackson cooked and loaded the dishwasher. She’d roped a unicorn out here in the woods. “He can do an annual camp out with the guys while still having a great life with you. That’s okay, right?”

“Yeah.” Becca shifted and turned. “I think he’d like to camp every weekend, like a lifestyle rather than a holiday break.” Dread sounded in her voice.

That was a different take on the situation. Putting up with sporadic time apart throughout the year sounded healthy. Living two different lives sounded like a breakup. “Uh oh.”

“Yeah.” Becca sagged.

“Could be just excitement over the semester ending and getting out of the dorms and being on vacation.”

“True. We’ll see how this plays out.” Becca paused. “I was thinking of this week as a bonding experience for us, not a test.” She disappeared from the room.

Troy returned and got into bed, put the lights out, and turned on the fireplace. Again, the room took on darkness lit only by the crackling glow.
