Although the Xiangshan Campus is away from the Hangzhou city center, Wang’s design intention is urban focused. He clearly identifies the importance of continuity in the design of the city’s fabric for maintaining the life of community and city:

… what makes a city interesting is the community it supports, public life, and spontaneity. This is why I am opposed to deliberately dismantling the old city: it is the core of a city. It is not only about preserving history, it is about urban life itself.
