After the police took their statements, photographed the interior and exterior, and took samples, they left Penelopeâs house. Sitting at the kitchen table with Elena in the aquamarine glass-tiled kitchen, she passed her hands across her face. âThank goodness theyâre gone.â
âAnd the paparazzi with them.â Their vans were blocking the street, so on an order of the fire marshal, they were required to move.
âWant to bet theyâll be back on foot?â Penelope grimaced, glancing around her house.
âSo, who are all the flowers from?â Elena asked, glancing around. âDonât tell me this is normal. Or did someone die?â
Penelope gave her a puzzled smile. âKristo. My housekeeper must have taken the delivery.â She wasnât sure how she felt about this overwhelming gesture.
âThis is outrageous.â Elenaâs eyes widened. âBeautiful, but way overboard.â
Penelope nodded. âIâve watched his transformation from geeky nerd to master of the universe. He canât always express himselfâthatâs what I remember most about him. He used to stutter when he got around large groups of people, and took lessons to overcome it. Maybe this is his way of apologizing for that awful game photo of me.â
âOr because he seemed awkward after he found us in his office.â Elena angled her head toward the floral arrangements. âI like the way he apologizes. Itâs a great start,â she added with a wink. âBut youâre right, heâs still odd.â
Penelopeâs phone buzzed, and she pulled it from her pocket. A message from her agent floated across the screen. Another cancellation. And more messages from Kristo. She put her phone down and spun it around.
Elena leaned over. âWhoâs that from?â
âMy agent. Iâve got to put my life back together.â Penelope knew her life might never be the same. Once a model left the runway, she was easy to replace, so she had to figure out her next career move. She grinned at Elena. âHow about getting out of here?â
âWhere do you want to go?â
Penelope scanned her text messages. âMy friend Eva is having a party tonight.â Sheâd met the model through her friend Scarlett, whoâd handle her licensing deal with Olga Kaminsky at High Gloss.
âWhoâs Eva?â Elena asked.
âAnother model, and someone you should know. I met her through Scarlett, whose friend Jen is Evaâs contract attorney. Eva is well-connected with Hollywood people.â
Stefan walked in. âYouâre not going out to a party.â
Penelope stood to face him. âIt might look like a party to you, but Iâm networking.â She snapped her fingers in his face. âLetâs roll.â
