As much as your daydreams may say otherwise, we’re no longer living in the 1950s. Husbands must play a part in keeping the house orderly. That’s OK, because you’re a man: creative, adaptive, and able to overcome any obstacle. A little housekeeping needn’t cut into valuable guy time.

• Turn home repairs into a social activity. What are friends for if not to come over and help you fix the leaky sink? For the price of a few beers, you can live up to your responsibilities and hang with the dudes.

• Don’t turn off that football game! The game is a perfect time to vacuum, fold clothes, or do other autopilot tasks easily accomplished while keeping tabs on the score. And while you’re at it …

• Learn to love sports on the radio. Its joys are many, but one is that you can easily stay abreast of the game while power-washing the deck or repainting the bedroom.

• Don’t let the dishes pile up. That way, they never become overwhelming. Wash glasses and utensils as you use them to stave off imposing piles.

• Yardwork is like playing. Cue up some music, invite a few friends, fill the cooler, and watch in satisfaction as your busy Saturday afternoon turns into a productive good time.

• Schedule non-chores, too. Establish a regular weekday as pure, official, leisure-only guy time—and, in fairness, be sure your wife does the same for girl time. Insist on it. Chores should never intrude on this time for either of you.
