Work with Twilight

Beautiful twilight is found after the sun goes down in the western sky. You'll also find twilight in the southern and northern sky right at sunset, but the western sky yields the most exciting light—dramatic hues created a few minutes after sunset. There is about three or four minutes of totally blissful twilight in which to shoot.

The key is to wait, watch, test ... and shoot.

I took this photograph at Calico Basin near Las Vegas. Model Karie Laubhan is wearing a beautiful outfit designed by Shannon Weller. I used my Canon EOS 1D Mark II camera and set the exposure to 1/80 second at f/9. The ISO is set at 400.

To light Karie, an assistant held a Canon 550EX flash at camera left. I fired the flash with a Canon STE2 Speedlite Transmitter, which was mounted in the camera's hot-shoe.

This picture illustrates how the simple ingredients of wind, light and exposure can be combined to produce a dramatic image. There are no enhancements on this image; it's a straight out-of-the-camera shot.
