Chapter Thirteen

Kate

"There could be snakes out here, Kate," Amos says as he continues to look gingerly around.

"Just concentrate on picking up the sticks and not on anything scary."

Amos glares a little at me. "You're not helping."

I chuckle. For now, I don't think about Aaron or what occurred in the cabin. I don't think about the fact I will never get to have Aaron the way I've always wanted. The thought that Aaron will never get to be mine motivates me to gather as many sticks as I can until my arms begin to hurt.

"That's enough, isn't it?" Amos asks from a few feet away.

I turn to him, noting that his hand is also half-filled with sticks.

"It is. We better head back," I say as we begin to stomp our way back to the island.

"Do you think Aaron will give us a raise for this current trauma?" Amos asks in a low tone of voice.

I turn to face him, wondering for a moment whether he's joking. But Amos looks as serious as ever, so I shrug.

“I don’t know, Amos,” I say honestly, because it's the truth, and really something I haven't thought about.

As soon as we emerge out of the woods, I direct Amos to the spot I think would be perfect for the bonfire. Together, we arrange the sticks to form the letters SOS.

"I wish I had someone filming this," Amos says, feeling a little proud.

"Why?" I ask as I drop the last twig by the side, standing back to assess the results. It looks hopeless, but I am still optimistic that it will get the job done.

It has to.

"Now that that's done," I begin to say as I dust my hands off, "we find two stones to rub together."

"If you ask us to do something archaic again, I'm going to lose it," Amos says as he begins to make his way toward the jet.

"Where are you going?" I ask as I stare after him.

"To get a lighter. We have one in the jet." Amos responds with a look that says I should’ve known to ask. While Amos goes to pick up the lighter, I look around once more. I take in the endless water and look at the woods where I bathed in a river. I never expected to actually swim in the wild. Yet I did with Aaron, my very rich and uppity boss, standing several feet away.

I shake my head, because as much as I try, it's nearly impossible to think of Aaron as just my boss. It's going to take a lot of time to forget the memories that Aaron and I made here. I wonder if I ever will. I look up and find Aaron and Matt making their way toward me. Aaron reaches me and I find his eyes filled with pain. I briefly wonder if ending things between us has gotten to him the way it has to me.

"What are you doing?" he asks.

"Trying to get us help," I say as I look back at the jet to find Amos coming toward us with a lighter in hand.
