Adjectives
Coordinates with learning ordinal numbers, shapes, colors, animals, and plants. 2 to 4 weeks.
Children can now talk about their family members, pets, and where they live through descriptive words, most of which can be referred to as âadjectives.â
Example 1: Family Tree
Mrs. Dahl uses a large picture of a family tree. A name and age is scrolled beneath each family member. After teaching the most common terms used for family members, she asks questions such as âWho is Johnâs grandfather?â (Response: âHenryâ) and âWho is Maryâs daughter?â (Response: âSusieâ). After the students reach mastery, she advances to âWhat is Maryâs relationship to Paul?â (Response: âPaulâs sisterâ) and âWhat are Robert and Sara to their children?â (Response: âfather and motherâ). Finally, Mrs. Dahl asks the students to describe various members of the family. A student explains, âHenry is the grandfather to John, Susie, Paul, and Mary. He is 65 years old. He is Marthaâs husband.â
Example 2: Comparatives and Superlatives
Students can learn comparatives and superlatives. âWho is taller, Mario or Omar?â âWho is the youngest person in the class?â More difficult: âAre you younger or older than your brother?â âIs Maria younger or older than Thomas?â âIs Gabrielleâs birthday before or after Robertâs birthday?â âWho is a faster runner, you or your sister?â Students respond with complete sentences: âI am younger.â âMaria is older.â Gabrielleâs birthday is before Robertâs.â âMy sister is the faster runner.â
Example 3: Ordinal Numbers
With similar activities, students can learn ordinal numbers: âWho is first in line?â or âWho sits in the fifth desk of the second row?â More difficult: âExplain where Juan sits.â
Example 4: Adjectiveâs Position Before Noun
Students learn to put the adjective before the word modified: âOmar is a tall boy.â âMy mother is a smart woman.â âMy pet is a brown dog.â
There are many other activities for learning adjectives. Objects such as dolls, stuffed animals, or school tools can be passed around and discussed. As teams, students can take turns listing descriptive words, orally or in writing. Students describe themselves, each other, the teacher, family members, pets, their homes, and/or their artwork. They identify descriptive words in a colorfully written story. They write simple paragraphs based on those descriptions.
