The principles of programming and progression are addressed more fully in Chapter 14, but it may interest you to compare how the suggestions for a complete novice differ from a runner who is experienced in strength training. Table 6i shows a typical resistance training session for a well trained runner. This doesn’t include some of the more conditioning-based exercises that may also be incorporated in the session. It will hopefully give you an idea of how a very basic set of movements can be progressed towards a session with more volume, complexity and explosiveness.
