Chapter Twelve

Offer Accepted

Halfway home, I changed my mind and decided to stake out the Order of the Sun’s temple; I’d only ever seen her enter the temple after one of our meetings and I wanted to confirm my suspicion that she also came from there. I had roughly an hour before I could reasonably expect her to show up at the restaurant, so I strolled along the north side of the street opposite the front of the temple and feigned interest in the wares of the various shops.

After working the street, I went back to the sausage restaurant and lied about leaving my hat in the back, asking if I could go look for it. They waved me back and as I did a cursory search, I noted the absence of the metal rod that I suspected was an antenna. I thanked the owner for his help while he apologized about not having my non-existent hat and went back to the street to walk the shops along the south side.

After getting a good feel for the neighborhood, I camped out in a restaurant over a mug of beer. I chose a seat on the corner that gave me a good view of the front door of the temple as well as down the street I expected Emily to take on her way to our meeting. It also allowed me to lean back into the shadows if she passed by.

With fifteen minutes left before our meeting, the door of the temple opened and Emily descended. She paused on the stairs, talking to a sentient of lizard descent dressed in the bright yellow robes of the Order of the Sun. They didn’t talk for long; it looked to be more of an extended goodbye than anything important, but it may have been a bit of deception, keeping up the appearance of some sort of religious interaction. I grabbed the robed stranger’s image and started a file titled “Emily’s Case Officer” on him.

Emily took the anticipated route, and after she passed, I paid my bill and caught up enough to trail her. She didn’t deviate in her path to Hotel White House. I took a walk around the block and putzed around for five minutes before entering the restaurant. She’d already ordered two beers and pushed one toward me when I sat down. I took a sip and let her open the conversation.

“We’ve agreed to your terms,” she said.

I did not expect a blanket agreement, and it let me know that they really wanted me to be the one investigating the situation. I nodded agreement, waiting for more.

She pulled out a coin purse and softly placed in on the table, “Here are ten eagles; you’ll get the rest when you’re done.”

I took it, unlatched the leather strings, and counted the coins within.

“We’ve got a deal then,” I affirmed. “I’ll scout out the site tonight and tomorrow, and then infiltrate the following night.” I was lying, of course; no need to let her know
