Sherry was thrown violently back into the world.

She opened her eyes, totally sober, then rolled over to rouse her man awake.

“What is it?” Eamon was groggy, but still up enough to hear and understand.

“I know where he is,” Sherry said. “I saw William with Angel.”

Chapter Eighteen

The stage had become Gleeson’s favorite place in the world.

Every sermon was special, but some seemed to sit on him like a fur coat, warming him despite the Montana winter. This was one of those — two big announcements in one. The last three months had finally ironed out the tribulations of Stonefall’s first half-year. What happened with Percy outside and with those captured members of The Forsaken a few days before that seemed to change everything for the better inside.

He could feel it in the air, and so could everyone else. People would stand in line to tell him. Not just the Brothers heading their families, but the women and children who were smiling, knowing they were safe from those visitors looking down on them from the sky because Stonefall was righteous and true. It had been spared.

Everyone knew their place. Tonight there would be two significant changes, and when the sun rose again in the morning, Stonefall would be that much stronger. Even the situation with Roy was improving. He sat off to the side, watching the sermon in silence.

“We have come a long way since we first fortified our walls.” Gleeson said, transitioning from the end of his sermon to the first of his announcements. “We were all lost, and Stonefall’s women needed guidance and hope. Someone with the life behind her to see the promise of tomorrow. We needed a Women’s Group, and so The Good Lord gave us Lucinda. Now her work with the Women’s Circle has come to an end.”

He found Lucinda in the crowd and smiled. The Flock, for the most part, followed his gaze.

“When Joshua had grown old, having lived many years, the Lord told him, ‘You are old and have lived many years, but much of the land still remains to be possessed.’ Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is gained in a righteous life. Lucinda has given to Stonefall, and now Stonefall shall give back to Lucinda.”

Gleeson noticed how old and haggard the woman actually looked. Yes, this was needed. And perhaps overdue.

“Lucinda has been an inspiration to the hardworking women of Stonefall, and now she is passing that duty to another from our Flock. Melinda, would you please stand?”

Melinda stood and half-smiled, shy under the light of all that attention. Stonefall admired her, and now they would hold her in even higher esteem. The Flock looked happy, especially Ophelia, beaming as though Melinda were really her mother. But Gleeson couldn’t help but notice Kirk sitting beside her, and the look on his face showed he wasn’t pleased.

He remembered the man Kirk had been before God filled the sky with His gleaming silver promise. Back when he’d been friends with Walter and a servant of the Aryan Nation.
