I got over my jubilation pretty fast. Just about the time the ship jerked beneath our feet for the umpteenth time, I clicked that we were still very much on a sinking ship. And that we would become quite intimate with it in a very molten way within a matter of seconds if we didn’t act fast.

I kept my eyes fixed to the transparent ceiling, and I caught sight of the Nava just as she buzzed overhead. I watched her blaster firing on those attacking us from the ground and I noticed that the shooting subsided. I had time to speculate who might be at the blaster: Milky, while Foy’s cousins watched on, just as the ship swung around and sent us flying to the other side.

As we lay there in a heap, feeling the ship gyrating over and over again, Wodd said, “Captain? How’re we going to get out?”

“I don’t kno—”

In a flash of light the ceiling above our heads smashed wide open. A direct hit from the Nava’s cannons. I stood stunned, thinking about how close that shot could’ve come to killing both me and Wodd, but not too long, seeing our chance to dash over to the newly opened escape route.

The ship got caught in a gentle flat spin. I felt my stomach crunch in on itself and nausea seep through me, but I held back my vomit. There’re times for vomiting and times for action. And this was a time for action.

At that point I recalled that I hadn’t had the damn thing looked at for ages—not bothered to service it. The reason? I had difficulty getting my wide gut through its not-so-ample girth, okay? And being, until recently, a solo pilot I had never really had reason to use it. Never having had to pick anyone up.

I’d like to say that the reason I allowed Wodd to step on my shoulders and be the first up the pipe was because I’m a noble and clear thinking person, a true captain. But, it was more likely for one of those reasons I’ve mentioned above. Those, and I wanted to see whether it might chew up Wodd. He was the guinea pig.

The tube did its work on Wodd, sucking him right up into the Nava. I watched on as the tube dangled lower, getting closer to me. The ship below my feet sped up its revolutions and I knew that I’d have to take the leap sooner rather than later, or I really would be done for. And so I did jump upward, feeling the suction struggling to drag my flab kicking and screaming into the belly of the Nava.

I didn’t get stuck. Not quite. There were a few moments where I was close, where I thought that I would never ever get any further along. But just as
