In 2014, Limestone Branch Distillery partnered with Chattanooga [Tennessee] Bakery to create possibly the most Southern adult beverage ever: Moon-Pie Moonshine. With the tagline “Like a MoonPie with a KICK!” the shine uses the official flavor profiles for the three most popular MoonPie flavors: chocolate (50 proof), vanilla (53 proof), and banana (53 proof).

Chattanooga Bakery, which has been owned for generations by the Campbell family, has recently been exploring ways to expand the MoonPie brand, which turns 100 in 2017. Pairing with a spirits company that also cherishes its family tradition—particularly a family in Kentucky—was appealing. According to MoonPie legend, the chocolate-covered cookie-and-marshmallow treat was created in 1917 after a Kentucky miner asked one of the bakery’s traveling salesmen for a snack “as big as the moon.”

In March 2015, the chocolate MoonPie Moonshine was named the World’s Best Liqueur and the Best Chocolate Liqueur at the 2015 World Liqueur Awards presented by TheDrinksReport.com.
