CHAPTER 11

ANXIOUS'S TAIL SWISHED as he studied Constance with adoring eyes. The rest of us jumped back, panicked, while I wondered how I'd got things so very, very wrong.

Constance frowned as she waved her pruning clippers around and said, "The weeds. They're poking through the path, see?" She pointed at the dandelions at our feet in the gravel as her eyes widened and she laughed. "You thought I meant you, didn't you? How funny."

"I didn't!" huffed Dad, relaxing his grip on my shoulder.

"Liar," I said, beyond relieved.

"We're involved in a murder mystery, so we have it on the brain," admitted Mum, stepping out from behind Dad.

"Really? How exciting. Is it gruesome? What happened?"

Once we'd explained about the campsite killing, which Constance was very interested in, she showed us around the garden and we enjoyed a pleasant half hour admiring the plants and asking questions. When the tour was over, we settled in the shade of the silver birch on the lawn, and she brought out a fresh jug of lemonade with ice cubes tinkling.

With Anxious getting fresh water from an outside tap, we were all suitably refreshed and finally beginning to cool down.

"What brings you to these parts, may I ask?" inquired our generous host.

"It's another long story and another mystery," I admitted. "I seem to get embroiled in a lot of them."

"Max is like a real life Columbo," said Mum, beaming with pride. "Although much scruffier. He's been up to his neck in murders lately, but solved them all. He's great at it."

"Thanks, Mum."

"How exciting. Nothing much happens here, so please tell me. That sounded so gruesome at your campsite, but surely there isn't another murder?"

"We aren't exactly sure," I admitted. "You see, it all began with a note…"

As I told the story, it was clearly upsetting Constance as she turned almost white and drank endless glasses of lemonade. She rubbed at her throat and then her arms, red blotches like hives mottling her skin. I hurried through the rest, explaining about this being the only lead we got from Noel's wife.

"The man had a wife?"

"Yes, why?" I asked.

Constance shrugged. "I suppose I assumed he was single if he had the campervan and was travelling. Especially if he kidnapped someone."

"His wife said they usually travelled together, but once a year he pretended to have the campervan in for a service that took weeks. But it was an excuse to most likely get up to no good," said Dad.

"But we can't figure this out. It makes no sense how he could do it. Hiding someone in a campervan seems impossible. We came to the spot his wife told us was their favourite and where he would come alone for a few days sometimes, and although it's remote and private, it's still a massive risk, don't you think?"

"Way too big a risk. How very peculiar. But are you sure about this? Couldn't it just be a terrible mistake?" Constance rubbed her arms, the rash receding, but I still tried not to upset her so kept my tone light.
