Chapter 5

It took Steve the next three months to rebuild Maria’s car to the point they could use it to try to escape from Corpus Christi. During those months, the gang war raged on outside of their house each night. Night was when the gangs came out of hiding and filled the streets with gun fights and dead bodies. Steve had to quit working overtime so he could make it back home before dark and the gun fire that starts up as the sun goes down. Maria spent her days trying to get everything she needed done holing up in her house praying Steve made it home on time. After eight weeks of walking to work each morning on streets filled with bodies and wounded gang members, Steve became hardened to their suffering and ignored their cries for help.

“Get your stuff packed. We’re leaving,” Steve announced one morning after spending a few hours working on Maria’s car. He had finally rebuilt the car and put in a new gas tank and it was ready. Steve was confident the car would make it out of the city and to safety and he didn’t want to waste another minute before leaving.

“You’re done?”

“Yeap. Let’s get out of here,” Steve replied. After several weeks of arguments, Maria had talked Steve into giving up any hope of going to Biloxi to work for the company’s boatyard. She had talked him into leaving Texas and going to Mark’s farm in Oklahoma.

“We should be fine all the way to Oklahoma. I’ve saved enough gas from the decommissioned boats to fill up at least once and that should be enough. If we leave now, we should be able to drive all day and get there before dark.”

“Kids, get your bags. We’re leaving.”

Steve and his family piled into Maria’s car and pulled out of their home with smiles on their faces. The home had taken a beating from the gang wars and looked nothing like it did only a few weeks ago. Steve’s truck invited target practice and the truck and front of the house were riddled with bullet holes from passing gang members. Steve had piled a layer of sandbags up to protect what they could, but gang members had shot into the house above the sandbags. When it rained last week, the ceiling dripped water because of the hundreds of holes in their roof. The house was becoming a shack and was falling apart from the barrage it had taken from gang members passing by during the night. Due to the constant gun fire, Steve and his family had slept on the floor in the back room for the last three months. They did not want to risk being hit by stray bullets as they slept. They were looking forward to the quiet of the farm so they could get a full night’s sleep without the fear of bullets striking them as they slept.

“Which way?” Maria asked.

“I figured we could try I-37. “

The family of refugees didn’t make it more than three miles before coming to their first road block.
