Chapter 30 – Time-Shift

Ronnie wiped her eyes and made an attempt to compose herself. Why was a priest here? Her legs were shaky, and she sat down on the bench, soaking her skirts with the water Jack spilled. She stood up abruptly and frantically wiped at the water stain on her butt. Deep breath let it out. She closed her eyes and willed away the tears, hoping she could compose herself for whatever nonsense the priest would bring. She tried to get a better look at him, but his face was covered by a hat.

“Ma’am. Father Reynolds is here to see you.” The guard unlocked the cell door, letting the priest in and relocking the door behind him.

Ronnie took a deep breath. “Thank you.” She was not looking forward to talking to any more priests. So far, they had proven to be less than fatherly.

“Ronnie!” The priest said. Shocked at hearing her real name she spun around.

He took off his hat and all Ronnie could see was a broad, white-toothed smile. It took her a second to figure out why it seemed so familiar. “Oh my God, Mathias! Are you okay?” She stepped toward him and hugged him fiercely.

“Oh, zat is painful.” He put his arms around her and clumsily hugged her back.

“I’m sorry.” She stepped away from him. “How did you get in here? Are you okay? I thought you were dead!” She wiped away the tears of joy this time.

“Yes, Ronnie, vat is zis strange vord you keep using? Oh Kay. Never mind, vee do not have time. Indeed, I have been shot, but I am still valking. Listen, Ronnie, I do not have long, for zee real priest vill arrive in a trice. Vat is your surname? I know it is not Ingram.”

“My name is Ronnie Andrews. My real name is Veronica but only my mom calls me that. Where were you shot?” She stepped back and looked over his big frame.

“My arm, here.” He pointed to the back of his upper arm. “The ball vent right through and did not lodge in the flesh, and the vound is freshly cleaned and wrapped.” He put his other hand through his hair and looked out toward the door. “Madam Zangari told me zat vee vill be together again, in another time. I vill vant to know you zen.” He looked at her intently. She could see the affection in his eyes and hear it in his voice.

Ronnie resisted the urge to hug him again and instead squeezed his hand. He squeezed back, smiling at her. “She said that? What does it mean?”

“I know not, Ronnie Andrews.” It seemed as if he were trying out her real name, to see how it felt on his lips. A small, sweet smile formed there.

“Can you get me out of here?” Ronnie asked, not sure how she felt about him knowing her real name.

“I have zus far used up a few favors already, to get in,” he smiled. “But have no fear, Ronnie Andrews.
