Play No. 2: Toxic Stars Cash-In. These toxic stars also know they won’t suffer when booted for sexual misconduct given their lucrative deals and payouts. For instance, Google reportedly agreed to pay two executives, Amit Singhal and Andy Rubin, a total of $135 million upon forcing them out when the public learned of the many credible complaints against them (Shannon Liao, The Verge).26 But for the public outcry and shareholder class actions, Les Moonves (who was named Hollywood’s highest-paid executive in 2017) would’ve walked away from CBS with a $120 million severance despite numerous allegations against him. The list is long, the denials plenty, and the public sympathy misplaced.

Play No. 3: Oodles of Undeserved Second Chances. What’s also misplaced are public cries about women ruining a man’s career, as most men rarely struggle to come back from sexual misconduct. Here are some examples: After Bernie Sanders reportedly fired him in January 2019 for allegedly kissing a subordinate and making crude sexual remarks, Robert Becker was hired that same year by Marianne Williamson to run her presidential campaign (Alex Thompson, Politico). On the eve of his antics becoming public in late 2017, Disney sent John Lasseter on a six-month paid “sabbatical” yet kept the Frozen filmmaker on the payroll through 2018, after which he was allowed to retire only to be quickly hired as an exec at Skydance Animation. After four women in media recounted sexual misconduct by journalist Glenn Thrush, the New York Times suspended its star White House correspondent without pay for some two months before simply reassigning him to another department as though problem solved! And my personal favorite: Eyal Gutentag! He was general manager of Uber’s LA office until he reportedly forcibly groped the breasts and buttocks of a subordinate in front of multiple employees during a group outing. Four months later, in January 2016, Gutentag was hired by ride-hailing service HopSkipDrive as COO, only to hop on over to ZipRecruiter later that year in another executive spot, where he stayed until April 2019, when BuzzFeed put his misconduct on blast, after which he suddenly resigned (Davey Alba and Ryan Mac).27 (To note: Between his hops, the married Gutentag started a foundation to give back to his community. Ahh . . . moral licensing much?)

Perhaps the public should cape for those who don’t easily get second chances and actually suffer in sexual harassment situations—like the women and men who are harassed.
