THE NEXT DAY, WE GET back to Ivy Hill. On the flight, Ivy tells me stories from her grandparents and of her childhood. She avoids her parents, and I won’t force the subject just yet. I know they are dead, and knowing they can’t hurt her is all I need.

I also ask her who else she wants to meet or talk to or see that she can’t now, and she gets a wicked smile and says Johnny Cash. I let out a growl, and she laughs.

“He’s not my type, baby, but I love his music, and his and June’s story too. I’d love to hear him sing in person. He died before I could go to a concert of his.”

I agree to make it happen.

“There is one more thing.”

“Name it, and it’s yours.”

“There is a photo of your time in the Army. You’re sitting on a stool in uniform, playing the guitar, and you are looking off to the side?”

I nod, remembering that day.

“I want that picture blown up and framed to be placed in Ivy Hill.”

“Done.” I smile. My girl is easy to please.

When we get home, the picture of me eating my birthday cake a few weeks earlier is waiting in our room. I stare at it, and I know why she loves it. The look I was giving her is like I was fucking her with my eyes. She shows me where on the wall she wants it hung, and I make it happen.

We have one week left together, and I try not to think about that and just live in the moment. I take her out to dinner twice, and we do some shopping. We spend the days out by the pool and make love on every surface of the house again.
