ARLA WOKE IN A BLACK darkness. She was warm, lying in...soup? Warm, thick liquid surrounded her. The surface she was on was spongy. So comfortable. Nothing ached, not her back or hips or joints. That was unusual; it had been years since she woke up pain free.

Her memories came back. Kryshal... the dining hall, those awful men... Where was she now? She sat up and felt around. She was in a puddle. A mud bath?

“Skyleen? Kryshal?”

“I am here Arla. Let me make a glow.” She heard some sloshing through the liquid.

Light came from all around; it was soft, golden. Everything was a deep, rich yellow.

Kryshal squatted next to her. She was lying in a pool of rich dark amber liquid. They were in a cavern with a high ceiling. The glow came from the walls, which were yellow, almost orange, with an odd stringy texture. The surface beneath the pool also glowed.

She sat up, then realized from the flick of his eyes that she was naked. She slid back into the pool. “Where are we? What is this place?”

“You were cut from my scale and it made you sleep too much. I worried you wouldn’t awake so I brought you here. My ship was there in a room. The lady, your friend, helped open the door to the void.”

“I cut myself. I do remember seeing blood on my finger. So you had a ship and Skyleen opened the hold so you could get away?”

He smiled, showing even white teeth, and his teal blue eyes nearly sparkled in the soft light. “Yes. Yes. We speak better now, aye? Better since you sleep here.”

“Where is here? This can’t be your ship?”

He chuckled. “No. That is my ship.” He waved to somewhere behind her and she ventured a glance. A tiny shimmering gold ship sat a few feet behind her.

“We are at my home. My world. But we are on the outside, where the healing pools are. When you are ready, we can go farther in.”

His words made no sense to Arla. “All right. So we are far from the ship where my friends are?”

“Yes, yes. Very far.”

“How long was I asleep?”

He paused for a moment. “One of the sleeps on the ship.”

Arla wondered what had happened to Skyleen and the others. And here she was sitting naked in a bath of goo. “I would like some clothes.”

He rose. “I will get.” He went to the ship and returned with a towel and a garment of soft beige cloth and held them to her. The garment was a baggy tube that fastened behind the neck, leaving arms and back bare.

“Here is wash.” Kryshal held up a hose with a spray nozzle and turned it on. He retreated to the ship while she rinsed the yellow-orange goo off her body and out of her thick hair. She dried off, wrapped her hair in the towel and put on the tube dress, glad to have something to cover up with. It was soft, fluid fabric made of a nubby loose weave.
