THE GOAL: REPLACE YOURSELF

The real job of a leader is to build other great leaders—to work themselves out of a job. That's right—find someone better and smarter to replace you. As leaders we work to give our jobs away to someone we have developed to be better than we are.

Leaders must discover potential in others, encourage that potential, and help to build it so much that the leader becomes obsolete. Then the leader can excitedly step aside, yielding to the next generation.

Unfortunately, leaders with egos feel threatened and often hoard their power rather than relinquish it. Those egomaniacs think they're the smartest person in the room and irreplaceable. The reality, though, is that they should be replaced immediately.

In building new leaders, old leaders step aside with satisfaction to watch their creations succeed. Just as Michelangelo saw the potential in his block of marble and then sculpted his great statue David over several years, a leader must have the patience to see the potential in someone else.

Great things come from humble beginnings. At some point as a leader, you must move on to allow your creations to stand on their own.
