Eleven

Brynn paused at an intersection between two tunnels. Water dripped from a hole in the roof, and a glimmer of dawn light shone into the gloom. Charlie squinted up at the sky. “What do you know about that? I didn’t think this planet ever got light.”

“The suns shine on this planet the same as any other. Maybe it’s just our luck that we always land on the nightside.”

“Or maybe Ipli only has a nightside. Maybe it’s always dark.”

“In more ways than one. We’ll have to keep it quiet from here on out,” Brynn said. “We’re half a mile from the facility.”

“Do you have any plan at all for getting into it?” she asked.

He eased closer to her and showed her his tackle, zooming in on the facility. “This tunnel here runs under the facility four levels below the lowest production floor. These are ventilation fans here and here, so it looks like a ventilation channel for the facility. That means there must be some access between the facility and there. Besides, the tunnel is liable to be deserted.”

“And if it isn’t?”

“Then we pretend we’re scavengers hunting for scraps.” He cracked a grin. “Platinum armed scavengers.”

She chuckled. “You’re the boss.”

“Damn straight. Come on.”

“I wouldn’t mind a few Chechog on this mission,” she remarked as they left the light and reentered the murky labyrinth. “They’re bulletproof, have supernatural healing powers, and can leap tall buildings. I’m jealous.”

Brynn didn’t answer. He let his thoughts wander. He’d envied the Chechog more than once since he’d met them on Paav.

The pair continued through the underground maze without saying a word, Brynn monitoring their position as they went. He also scanned the area for any scavengers and checked the movements of Zariat technicians working in the facility. None of them left the building. They didn’t enter the Catacombs, and no one else entered the facility.

A few scavengers roamed the caverns, but they didn’t come near Brynn and Charlie. He made his way to a series of channels running level with the facility. He couldn’t go any further without risking someone seeing them.

He navigated to a shaft that opened to the level below them. From here, he made out a network of ladders and holes connecting each level with the ones above and below.

He pointed down it, and he and Charlie got down on their knees. She extended her hand, and Brynn grasped her wrist. She gripped his arm and jumped. He swung her down and dropped her.

He swung his rifle over the side. Charlie landed on the next floor and swept her weapon back and forth while he aimed through the hole from above. When she gave him the thumbs up, he slipped over the side and let himself down next to her.

One level at a time, they made their way to the ventilation channel. They found it as deserted as Brynn had hoped. It didn’t drip and, best of all, lights shone from the ceiling to show them exactly what wasn’t there.

They jumped down, and Charlie smirked.
