Chapter 17

They ended up staying in the Magnificent system for five days. The last few days were spent making arrangements for future deliveries, buying, selling, moving cargo, and other administrative work.

Kelly had looked into the properties Annis had found in New Canton and came back with a long list of reasons why they were unoccupied and cheap. Nothing looked insurmountable but Annis was hesitant to add more trouble to her life. In the end, Jane told her to go for it. They were already on the lookout for trouble, some local gangs or whatever lived in the slums around the buildings in question wouldn’t be a serious issue.

“Besides,” Jane added. “It will keep us on our toes.”

The price was excellent and she’d be able to rent the building and purchase it later. She contacted a lawyer on New Canton and had them start making arrangements for her. The prototype mining support ship was finished ahead of schedule and Hank tested its capabilities. They found a few bugs to work out and added a pair of fighter-sized lasers to it and then contracted it out to Majesty Station.

Annis wasn’t happy to lose her new toy, but building her image and friendship with Rachel and the people here was more important. The deal was fair so she wasn’t taking a loss.

Rachel was pleased to have another small craft with weapons on it to safeguard the planet. What they needed was to finish the pair of weapons platforms they were constructing in the belt for planetary defense. Once completed, they would be towed into place. They would be positioned above each of the planet's poles and together they would be able to intercept any unauthorized ships trying to land on the planet illegally. In the meantime, they needed small craft.

With their business concluded, Annis finally rejoined her crew on the Whipping. Ben and Samson, with their army of bots, had started another of the support ships for mining operations. It was meant to scout out resource-rich asteroids so that tugs and mining ships could avoid the less profitable junk rocks and maximize profits.

Leon was still in a coma and Annis visited him regularly. She’d sit in a chair by his bed, talk about her day, or put on some calming music and work. She tried to sound upbeat when she talked to him but it was hard to see him unresponsive.

They were a day out from New Canton and Annis was going over her messages from the lawyers when Emily walked into Leon’s room.

“Hey Leon, did you miss me? You really know how to get a girl's attention, now—” Emily jumped. “Captain! I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you were here!”

Annis chuckled. “Oh, I thought you were teasing me like Kelly does.”

“What? Oh!” Emily blushed bright red. “Um, I try to keep him company when I’m not busy.”

“It’s fine, I was just getting some work done. I can come back later if you’d prefer.”

“No, that’s fine. I think he can hear us, so I talk to him, joke around, and tell him he’s being lazy and it's time to get up.
