Chapter 13

In the days leading up to her trip, Lauralie was filled with anxiety. She thought about what Rachel said. Maybe she was right? Why did Colton’s attitude frustrate me so much unless I really cared what he thought of me? She shook her head. That’s impossible! She just couldn’t figure out why. She’d met lots of attractive men before and even dated a few of them. But none of them affected her the way Colton did. She couldn’t put her finger on what made the pilot so different from the rest.

She went to bed early the night before her flight, but sleep never came. After a restless three hours, Lauralie rose and checked to make sure that she’d packed everything she needed. She glanced at the clock on her bedside table. Four o’clock. It would be another forty-five minutes before Hank arrived to pick her up. She had called Hank last night to inform him that she’d like to set off at four forty-five sharp. She didn’t want to get caught in traffic when she arrived in New York City.

Lauralie stepped into the bathroom and turned on the tap. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. The thought of seeing Colton in an hour’s time made her anxious. Despite the fact that she missed him, Lauralie didn’t want to see him. She didn’t know how to react to him later.

Argh! Brushing him aside, she showered quickly, dried her hair and pulled it into a ponytail. She chose a T-shirt and wore a sweatshirt over it and sweatpants, and grabbed a heavy coat to wear after they arrived in New York.

The doorbell rang just as Lauralie finished brewing her coffee. Hank stood in the doorway with a wide grin.

“Good morning, Ms. Shaw,” Hank greeted cheerfully as he reached in and took Lauralie’s luggage which she had placed by the door earlier.

“Good morning, Hank. I’m sorry that you have to come so early,” she apologized as Hank loaded her luggage onto the vehicle.

Lauralie folded her arms and pulled her sweatshirt tighter as she stood in the driveway. The wind was chilly, especially in this wee morning.

“No problem, Ms. Shaw,” Hank assured her. “Getting up early keeps me young.” He chuckled.

Lauralie considered his words for a while. “But four forty-five is worse than early.” She stood in the driveway while Hank continued to load the luggage.

“Hank?” Lauralie called out to him after a long pause. He had finished loading all her luggage onto the limo by then and slammed the door shut. He turned and faced her. “Yes, Ms. Shaw?”

Lauralie thought about the conversation she’d had with Rachel two weeks ago. “I know that I can be difficult sometimes, but I hope you know that I do appreciate you.”

“Thank you, Ms. Shaw. You know, I’ve been around since you were just a baby,” Hank reminded her. “I know you’re a good person, and I don’t take it personally when you get upset,” he assured her.

“I’m glad to hear that.” Lauralie smiled. What a relief!

“Now, let’s get you to the airport.
