“Firing,” I announced in a dry and cold tone.

The ship shuddered with a violent quake as the energy cannon unleashed a massive orange blast of power. The enemy’s yellow shielding flickered, stubbornly refusing to succumb to the intense barrage of the Fearless Renegade’s fleet. Our beam joined the others and slammed into the domed defense, not breaking it or even showing signs of weakening the shield.

“Solid discharge, power core is recovering smoothly,” Maebo reported.

The raven-haired woman sat across from me at the dining table. Her green eyes darted across the screen, checking the outputs from the makeshift station. In the cockpit Karko and Vero sat at the controls, one flying and the other one in charge of communications.

Commanding the ship and firing the guns from the spot I ate breakfast was a bit unusual, but it got the job done.

“Direct hit.” Vero paused her report. A few seconds later she said, “Commander Obst’s sensor officer is saying the shields are coming down soon.”

“Finally,” Karko said.

“A full day of endless bombardments. No wonder he said to bring extra hydrogen,” Maebo added.

I didn’t have much to say. After Gloria earned her wings, that brief reprieve from hustling to earn more Gs turned right back on. We linked up with twelve massive ships led by Commander Obst not far from the Yew Orbital. Six of the vessels were cruisers, three battleships, one carrier, and two haulers. Then there was us…

We didn’t really fit in with the composition besides to act as a juicy target. Which, that’s what I figured we were. StarCutters didn’t have shields for the most part, and Sleipnir would need a few million more in upgrades to afford one. Out of the entire fleet, if anyone wanted to score a hit, it would likely be against us.

Even with the glaring dangers, I still accepted the mission. We need the Gs, and more importantly, the experience. Playing bait for ambush predators was never ever fun, but it was something we could do to earn trust and establish ourselves.

“Cannon recharging in three, two, and firing,” I said a few seconds later.

Again, the enemy shield held. Honestly, I was a bit surprised because the station was only a few times bigger than our largest battleship, just vertical, instead of horizontal in nature. I didn’t watch the beam impact the shield, studying the surrounding area.

Three planets lay in perfect orbit around a dying star. The Seethoids mined their star, a generally bad concept and this was why. The station, which rested between planet two and three, seemed like bait. It really did, especially now that we saw how active and well fueled with raw elements their power core was.

I rotated the image, finding a crackling blue and purple opening only a few minutes of flight behind us. Commander Obst’s battleship powered this side of the portal, waiting in the wings as the rest of the fleet did the hard work.

To be fair, someone needed to secure our way home and his ship could handle the high-power demand.
