Chapter 13

WE WERE SLIGHTLY ANNOYED, having to go on a raid instead of resting in the freehold after a three-day watch, but nobody cared about our grumbling. An order was an order. We quickly packed up and headed to the Serpent Canyon together with Serena, Frost, Mark, and their spears.

Almost immediately, we found out that the raid had been caused by the news brought by Ice’s team. The night before, the Riks had gathered a meeting that decided to urgently eliminate the threat, finishing off the larvae and the cocoons, finding the nest of the creatures, and destroying it.

And that’s how we ended up bumping our butts in the saddles.

Twenty-seven people, ten of them Ascendants, were a force to be reckoned with by the standards of our freehold. If one-fifth of all combat groups had been sent out, the matter was serious and truly dangerous, maybe the most dangerous of everything I had experienced after my arrival: going by the fragments of conversations and the sour expressions on the guys’ faces, nobody was eager to visit the Sundered Lands.

The raid was led by Serena Lafayette. In her field gear, she was dramatically different from the temptress with devilish eyes who had offered me a drink at the bar: a stern and stringent commander enjoying the well-deserved respect of her soldiers. Serena was one of the oldest Ascendants of the freehold, a comrade-in-arms of Vincent, Guy, and Eirik, and a colleague of mine, in a way, with a strictly military profession, having served in the planetary security subdivision. Even Tolly the Thunder, who barely acknowledged authority, treated her with a degree of reverence.

Including Serena, her spear numbered eight warriors, two of them Ascendants. Frost had seven, three with Stigmata. I knew half of them — we slept in the same dorm. There were seven of us too (Yang was already back in the saddle), and six in Mark’s spear. In addition to the already familiar Ocarina, Randy, and Sand, he had two newbies, one of which I remembered very well: it was the red-bearded Mick. Both redheaded brothers had their faces dressed in medical bandages, but the elder one had gotten his arm fixed. They were pointedly paying me no attention, although I returned the favor.

I kept eyeing the gear carried by the men from the other spears. They had mismatching sets, mostly based on lightweight partial armor. Hunters, Warriors, Foxes... Some items had clearly been bought from natives. Others, however, wore Guardians, shooting visors, and sniper helmets — real Beta equipment. Everyone was well-armed. On top of light kinetic weapons, I saw impulse Arrows and Spears, powerful Gauss rifles, and even a rocket launcher strapped to the saddle of one of Serena’s men. A few brought compound bows of Earth make — a curious high-tech replica carried by Mark that the girl at the glasshouses had used to kill the bronze drake. And finally, there were Kel artifacts, Items or Item Runes. Ascendants were in no hurry to show them
