Chapter 6
âRed Alert! Red Alert! Port sections to battle stations! Repeat, port sections to battle stations!â
Kathryn was up and out of bed before she was even awake. She and ThrumPol stood in the middle of their dark dorm room in their pajamas, trying to figure out what was happening. âItâs a drill!â Thrum suddenly cried.
âNo kidding!â said Kathryn, awake now. âPort stations only. Pol, thatâs you and me. Letâs go!â Kathryn and Pol hurried into their uniforms as Thrum scrambled back to her bed to give them maneuvering room. She had been assigned a station on the starboard side of the dorm âship,â so she knew to stay out of the way and await further instructions.
âI was wondering when Mallet would schedule our next drill,â Kathryn remarked, remembering to clip her unruly hair back this time. âFigures heâd wake us up in the middle of the night.â
âItâs one oâclock,â Thrum reported helpfully. That meant that Kathryn had finished talking to Amelia only five hours ago. Deeply troubled by the experience, she hadnât gone to bed till midnight. Sheâd had less than an hourâs sleep! But she was brimming with energy now as the loudspeaker repeated, âRed Alert! Port sections to battle stations!â
Ready in record time, Pol ran for the door. âWish me luck!â she called back to her twin as she disappeared.
Kathryn hastened after Pol, telling Thrum, âLook: like youâve got it easy this time!â
âWeâll see,â Thrum responded, staring after her vanished twin.
The hallway echoed with the wail of the klaxon and the pounding of feet as cadets ran to their posts. Kathryn hurried to the nearest lift to find Dunkirk and several other cadets waiting for the lift doors to open. Kathryn wondered if Dunkirk was angry with her for how sheâd treated him that afternoon, but he didnât act put out. He said hello to her, running a hand through his bed-headed hair a little self-consciously. Then the lift doors opened and everyone piled inside.
Dunkirk gave a loud snort when Hally Coogan dashed into the lift just before the doors shut. Just like the first drill, Cooganâs uniform was perfect, his boots polished, his hair neatly combed. âYouâve done it again, Coog!â Dunkirk marveled. âWhatâs your secret? Donât you ever sleep?â
