A muscle in Jim's jaw danced. "I don't deny we invited them to dinner."" Were you drunk at that dinner? "Chang asked silkily." What?"
Jim drew back, confused and angered.
"Isn't it a fact," Chang, continued, "that you served Romulan ale, a beverage illegal in the Federation because of its overwhelming potency?"" The drink was served, "Jim admitted.
McCoy looked down and shook his head.
Why doesn't our attorney object? This is a damned show trial.
"This is a damned show trial," Rear Admiral Smillie said hotly to President Ra-ghoratrei. He did not want war, but he knew both Jim Kirk and Leonard McCoy-two of Starfleet's best. They had served the Federation well and were due to retire. They deserved a better fate than this. If he could just persuade Ra-ghoratrei to try something in terms of a rescue mission... Once Kirk and McCoy were safe, the diplomats could go in and clean up the pieces. Smillie felt certain that the Klingons' situation was too desperate for them to attempt war.
He glanced sharply at Sarek, who he felt was responsible for Ra-ghoratrei's reluctance.
Sarek did not react; the president ignored Smillie as well, his attention riveted on the trial proceedings.
Smillie sighed and returned his attention to the screen.
McCoy watched as Chang strutted back and forth in front of the prisoners' dock.
"And you still maintain that your ship did not fire on Kronos One? Would you have known if she had? Come now, Captain. The record clearly shows there were no other ships in the sector."
"There were no other ships in the sector," Kirk confirmed.
Dammit, Jim, McCoy wanted to shout at him, are you trying to get us the death penalty?
"Did you have occasion to refer to your ship's data banks during that night?"
"I checked the data banks, yes," Jim answered stonily. "And what did they tell you?"
Jim hesitated. "That we fired two photon torpedoes. But-was The rest of his answer was drowned out by the mob's howls. Chang gave a faint hateful smile." The witness is excused-for the time being."
He strode off as the judge gaveled for order.
McCoy's fear turned to honest anger as he recognized the next witness: one of Chancellor Gorkon's guards, minus his right arm. The arm could have been located-and, if too damaged, recloned-and reattached, or at the very least, replaced by a prosthesis. But the prosecution had chosen to use this unfortunate victim to play on the crowd's sympathies. Or perhaps the guard had chosen, as had Chang, to shun medical intervention and sport the disfigurement as a badge of courage. The defense attorney approached the witness. "Tell us what you saw the night Chancellor Gorkon was assassinated."
The guard nodded. "We were fired on by the Enterprise-was" Let that remark be stricken from the record. "The attorney turned and raised a hand toward the judge." The witness assumes Kronos One was fired on by the Enterprise, but has no direct knowledge of such."
"Denied," the judge intoned.
The attorney sighed and directed his attention back to his witness. "Continue."
"After the first hit," the guard said, "we lost our gravitational field.
