CHAPTER 21
James T. Kirk came to in the emergency room. There was a breathing mask over his face, and his body felt numb.
He pulled one arm out from under the sheet that covered him, and saw shiny ointment in a protective layer over burn-red skin. But the skin was there, though blistered in places; it was no more than a bad sunburn.
When Kirk sat up, Daniel Corrigan came over to him. "Lie down and rest, Jim. You’ll be fine. I’m going to send you home as soon as you have your turn under the healing rays."
"Home?" It hurt his throat to talk, but he managed, pulling the mask off. "Spock? Sarek?"
"Spock is out of surgery and in healing trance," Corrigan told him as he put the breathing apparatus aside and ran his scanner over Kirk. T’Mir, who was passing out fruit juice, brought some to Kirk. "Leonard stopped Spock’s internal bleeding," Corrigan continued. "It was not extensive surgery, and if I know Vulcans, Spock will be ready for release in the morning."
"Sarek?" Kirk insisted, his throat relieved by the juice. "Amanda? They’re not both—?"
"They are both alive," Corrigan assured him. "The fire is out, and it did not penetrate the stasis chamber. Sarek suffered less physical damage than you did—he came to while Sorel was examining him. He, too, is in healing trance. Sorel or T’Par will wake him when you are ready to go home—and Jim, I’m leaving it up to you to make Sarek go home. He will have no physical pain after healing, but he must rest. Repairs on that computer can wait until tomorrow."
"I’ve noticed that Sarek is just as stubborn as his son," said Kirk. "Perhaps I can exercise some of the techniques I use on Spock."
"And what techniques are useful in persuading stubborn humans to rest?" It was Sorel, coming up behind Corrigan. "Daniel, I recall that you were supposed to go home this morning."
"You didn’t complain when I was here to help with the emergency," Corrigan pointed out.
"Any protest at that time would have been pointless. However, the emergency is now over."
"How bad is the damage?" Kirk asked.
"The fire was confined to the emergency generator area and one wing of the hospital complex," Sorel answered. "Storn could tell you more precisely, but he is already busy making repairs."
"The important thing," Corrigan added, "is that no one died. It’s a nuisance that the computer’s down, but we’ve got power back, and our patients are being moved back to their rooms."
"And that is where you belong, Daniel," said Sorel, "in your room—asleep. T’Mir!" he called.
Kirk saw the healer’s daughter leave a patient to whom she had just given a drink, and come to Sorel’s side. "Yes, Father?"
"Take Daniel home to his apartment. Make him something to eat, and put him to bed."
"Sorel—" Corrigan protested.
"Daniel, you are operating on adrenaline. Now that the emergency is over it will subside—and if I did not see that you were cared for, you would eat nothing, fall asleep on
