Tuvok sat in his quarters going over his notes. He had narrowed the field to three suspects, all of them former Maquis. Of the three, only one seemed the most likely suspect.
Ensign Alery Matein had been in trouble before. On fifteen separate occasions, security had either been called to her quarters or interviewed her about an incident aboard ship. If Voyager had been able to stop at a starbase for routine maintenance, Ensign Alery would have been one of the few crew members who would have been dismissed.
But Voyager did not have the luxury of dismissing difficult crew members and replacing them with new crew members from a starbase. Voyager had to find a way to make those crew members fit in. If that was not possible, then they had to make certain that those crew members caused a minimal amount of disruption.
In the past five years, Ensign Alery had received forty-five visits from security personnel, many of them surreptitious. Her personal logs had been reviewed by everyone on the security staff, including Tuvok himself. She had gone to special socialization classes with the ship’s counselor, who, unfortunately, was also the ship’s doctor, and she had received more than two dozen official visits from Mr. Neelix in his capacity as morale officer.
Each of those visits had resulted in good behavior for a time. But, if Voyager’s maiden run had gone normally instead of the way it had, the report Tuvok wrote on stardate 48325.2 would have been filed with Starfleet. In that report, Tuvok had stated that he did not believe that Ensign Alery was Starfleet material and that her commission should be terminated.
He had believed that, as time progressed, Ensign Alery would grow into her job, but she was proving stubbornly unable to fulfill even the simplest of duties. The ship’s morale officer had ordered her out of his kitchen—permanently. She took her meals in her quarters on most days, although she was allowed into the mess hall when the members of senior staff were present.
Her favorite holodeck program was a long-running bar fight that she often ran with the safety protocols shut off. When she had broken her arm for the third time, the Doctor contacted the captain, who ordered the program deleted. Three months later, Tuvok discovered that Ensign Alery had re-created the program, stored it under a different name, and continued to run it on the holodeck. For that infraction, her holodeck privileges were denied for a full year.
Ensign Alery had plenty of reasons to hate her confinement on Voyager, but try as he might, Tuvok could find nothing in her actions, in the ship’s logs, or in her personal history to explain why Ensign Alery would take that hatred out on Seven of Nine. In the few times they had been together, they had treated each other cordially. Ensign Alery’s experience with the Borg was limited to guarding one of the least important cargo bays during Voyager’ s encounters with the Borg.
Indeed, only two things
