This time, the Gearmlian transport looked like a prison, nearly pitch black and surrounded by guards who paced back and forth with their rifles in hand. Thericia did her best to keep both herself and Torrence out of sight, behind a collection of starter fuel barrels. As she watched, a pair of Gearmlian guards in metallic gear strolled into sight. They each carried a rifle in casual fashion over their shoulder as they paced back and forth before the darkened main ramp.

Thericia strained to listen as the two guards spoke in low tones.

“...Prince....” one seemed to say.

The Prince? She could see the other shaking his head.

“...information....” the second said.

She wanted to sneak closer. Perhaps she could pick up a few more words.

“...fate....”

Thericia couldn’t tell which guard had uttered the last word. Suddenly, she gasped, a black feeling of horror threatening to engulf her. Something ominous, something involving Lady Ludzenia? The Prince’s fate? She must have misheard, from this distance. She held onto Torrey’s neck to steady herself. Would she dare approach the guards and seek re-admittance?

The rear ramp of the transport lowered. A long, sleek black vehicle, with its lights on but very dim, and its passenger bubble blackened, drove out and pulled up before the main ramp. Two regular Gearmlian soldiers climbed out and stood at attention as another pair of similar soldiers walked down the ramp. A third figure followed closely behind with a long robe flowing like a fluttering tail.

Lady Ludzenia, departing for somewhere in the middle of the night.

Thericia tensed. She didn’t have time to ponder her decision. Ludzenia and her soldiers climbed in. The sliding door closed. A short stabilizing tail raised from the body, and the hover-mobile lifted off and whisked away from the transport.

She couldn’t think of a reason why Ludzenia would leave the transport in the middle of the night, unless it was for a clandestine purpose. With a hard pull on the saddle, she sprang up on Torrence’s back.

“Go!”

Torrence reared up on his hind legs, lifting Thericia high into the air, and they dashed away into the night, in pursuit.

Within minutes, they departed the star base. Ludzenia’s vehicle made an unexpected turn away from the city and sped into the distance.

“Come on!” Thericia ordered Torrence, who lowered his head and charged even faster on his four powerful legs.

The hovercraft soon left the main road and followed a single-lane path up into the hills. When Thericia tried to steer Torrence onto the same path, the haissen reared back and shook his head, grunting a vehement protest. Thericia felt Torrence start trembling. She watched the dim lights of Ludzenia’s vehicle continue on, disappearing into the woods for a moment before reappearing higher up the path.

They were heading into the barren hills of Zemuir, the reputed home of pixies, Venot sprites, and other strange spiritual beings that populated the stories that Alscrasian parents told their children. She had never taken Torrence in, never taken him anywhere close. He was spooked, and she knew that animal instincts were much more trustworthy than human instincts.
