They started with the Captain, letting him know that as AOJ agents, Boggs and Ethie were opening a formal investigation into deaths on the Breckenridge.

Captain Olsen was of Scandinavian descent, a flowing white beard dropping several centimeters off his chin. He was a native of Aegea, a minor planet in the Juventas quadrant. If he maintained loyalty to the League, he did not show it. Certainly he remained willing to fly to Republican ports to keep the ship profitable.

“Well, of course there have been a higher number of deaths than usual since we left Epsilon. But I must say, especially with our more aged clientele, able and willing to pay for the level of luxury and service we offer on the Breckenridge, deaths while en route are not uncommon.”

Ethie noted the defensive tone.

She said, “Yes, but you have to admit this seems unusual, Captain. And not all cardiac arrests have the same signs, yet you have had three in a row with identical symptoms.”

She deliberately held back they knew about the nanobots found in the last victim’s vomit. She also steered clear of politics.

“We just want to interview your crewmembers. I’m afraid there will be a more formal inquiry when we get to Diego, but if we do most of the legwork now maybe we can save you some time in port there.”

His eyes grew wider at that. Nothing concerned a Captain more than needless delays at port. That would cost his company money, and he had already been detained far too long at Epsilon, thanks to the war.

Begrudgingly, he agreed to let the agents proceed.
