Mer said nothing as she settled into her harness and Tiro piloted the shuttle away from the ship. There were all the others flitting out, speeding to their own districts. Tiro set the course and made ready to pick up any hint that they might be observed at their earth landing place.

"The humans' war is very terrible."

Mer surprised him with her sudden comment.

"You have seen the record tapes. They always learn of worse weapons to be used."

"But there are humans who speak out against such weapons, try to stop these wars. That, too, is in the records."

"A very few. And those the rest turn upon and call non-kin," Tiro reminded her.

"It is a pity. There is some good in them. Surely that can be reached. True, they are lesser than Ka'at—perhaps because they cannot think-send. If they could ever be one mind at times, as we are one mind, then this wildness in them might be tamed. If they could once think-send, why did that power depart from them?"

Tiro was proud of his own knowledge of the tapes. "As Leader Ana said to us, there were never more than a few who could do this. And even then there were wars and killings. It is said in one such war those who dwelt in the teaching house of Bast were slain, and none thereafter could meet us mind with mind. No longer did the humans know what once we both had. Then there came strangers who did not even possess the memory of Bast. Those took our kin away to strange places where they had to hunt their food, to learn to kill to eat." Tiro shuddered. "Our kin forgot their high blood, lost some of their gifts, but never did they surrender in spirit to Man or call him master. And this, too, was held against us by humans who must rule all."

"Some humans have little for themselves," Mer commented.

"Sharing is not of their nature."

"That is not always so. The girl Elly shares."

Tiro turned his head. "Sister, remember the First Law. We have our mission. It might be well for you not to seek out that human child again."

"Say as well for yourself, brother," Mer's thought snapped back. "Is the boy Jim so old in evil that you hate him? I have watched you. He may not touch minds so well with you, but how else did he know your name? You must have tried the thought-send with him."

"That has never been forbidden," Tiro defended himself. "We make use of that talent to establish a contact when we are pressed for time. It is not real thought-send for it is never clear."

He caught Mer's amusement and felt angry.
