CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Deep Space, aboard Pina's Pride

Remi poked his head into the central compartment of the shared cabins he, Jock, and Thendara occupied. “You two ready to go? Pina’s expecting us for dinner in five minutes.”

“Yeah.” Jock grimaced. “We don’t want to be late and be told to go away without food again.”

Thendara shrugged. “She calls us her special guests but then pulls stuff like that and makes us more like the prisoners we really are.”

“Regardless,” Remi countered. “Now that we know how peculiar our host is, we need to be on time.” He stepped into the common area while zipping up his flight suit to his chin. “Ready?”

“Lead on, boss,” Jock said.

“We’re all in this together, Growler.”

“Thendara and I defer to you on how we handle this one. We still don’t know what Pina’s plan is. She says she wants to help us, but she isn’t the generous type.”

“Right now, our goal is to figure out her angle. Maybe she plans on telling us over dinner tonight.” Remi pressed the button by the hatch, and it slid back into the bulkhead. He stepped out into the passage, followed by Jock and Thendara. An armed crewman leaned against the nearby bulkhead. He tried to act like he was just hanging out in the area, but it was clear he was their guard.

Remi waved. “Hiya. Out for a pre-dinner stroll. Feel free to tag along behind us.”

The spacer scowled at Remi and then whispered something into the comm unit in his hand.

“Let them know we’re on the way, by all means.” Remi turned away from the guard and started toward the captain’s ready room. It was forward between her cabin and the modified free trader freighter’s bridge.

They reached the hatch outside the ready room at exactly the appointed time. Remi pressed the entry stud on the bulkhead.

“Come,” Pina Bute called from inside. The hatch slid aside.

Remi entered with his companions.

“Right on time,” Pina greeted. She leaned back in her chair at the head of the oval conference table and pointed at the bulkhead chrono with one of her short midriff arms. “I appreciate punctuality. Don’t you, Remi?”

“It has its purpose.” He stopped a few steps inside the door with Thendara and Jock behind him. “Should we sit anywhere we want or down at that end with you?”

“Please join me here.” The warlord indicated the seats closest to her.

Remi repeated a silent mantra not to choke the life from their captor before they knew what she really wanted with them. He walked over and took the seat next to Pina on the right. Thendara sat to Remi’s right, and Jock took the seat on Pina’s left side, across from Remi.

“Good. Now that you’re all here, I’ll have Cook bring up a few of his best creations. I want you to see that I’m treating you as guests, not captives.”

“Yeah,” Jock replied. “About that. We’d like to be able to contact our home base again if only to let them know where we are now and that we’re still alive.
