CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Someone cracked open the trunk, nearly blinding me in the piercing light of morning from the primary star. The Rammadors had returned and now were hauling us back to our feet and back inside the first floor.

I blinked and stretched out the kinks in my back from being crammed in the trunk with the kid. Taking in the Bay Casino as if for the first time, I realized how easy it would be to get lost in its luxuries.

Our glass elevator ascended through the hotel’s open spaces, giving Zihan and I picturesque views of the complex’s sun-drenched amenities.

Many rich patrons didn’t want to flash their famous faces all over the city where they could be bothered by paparazzi or reporters, so the Frantosia Bay Hotel and Casino had a multi-story shopping mall awash in natural light from the ample skylights above.

Maybe I was so taken with it because we were still alive. The fact that we were being taken anywhere had to be a good sign. Zihan and I exchanged a grin.

A canal ran the length of the mall’s hallways so visitors could take a leisurely boat ride or explore it on foot, featuring the best luxury brands and retailers, and an art and science museum housed inside an aluminum dome also shrunk in our view as our lift continued to rise.

We passed four arenas hosting live entertainment from theatre to dance to top music acts. This entire property was maintained and serviced by thousands of employees, and all of the attractions in the Frantosia alone were responsible for bringing in a whopping three billion credits per cycle.

Our elevator continued to climb, and I noticed the Rammadors seemed to relax the further we got from the ground floor casino. We were nearing the sky park on the roof. That made me uneasy, because I knew it was the most exclusive spot on the entire island.

Heavy security made sure that only the most rich and important VIP’s ever entered its cluster of posh restaurants and lavish nightclubs. The roof was a hotspot for celebrities, diplomats, business tycoons. But our elevator kept climbing until we reached that height.

The guards led us down the upscale garden path of the sky park dotted with butterflies and sculpted shrubs amidst aristocrats who glanced at us with looks of disdain in evening gowns and tailored waistcoats.

The long Infinity Pool at the top of the towers was a sight to behold. At four hundred meters in length, the troughs that collected falling water along each edge created the illusion of an artificial horizon between the rippling pool and the skyscrapers beyond. Built of stainless steel, it held hundreds of thousands of gallons of water for the guests who frolicked in it under the light of the primary star.

It was so beautiful that I almost forgot how all of this profit and opulence came at a morbid price for people like Zihan and T’Amira who did the grunt work but never got to reap the rewards.

No matter what happened from here on out, I’d have to watch my six.
