[SYSTEM: Congratulations! You have leveled up!]
He shook off the notification like he seemingly had the others. Roy wouldn’t have been in the mood to read any of the after-quest messages, even if he’d been fully conscious of them. He probably would have waved them off, more concerned with checking in with the rest of the team as soon as possible.
As it was, he read none of the post-dungeon texts.
The party looked beat, entirely worn down. None of them had anticipated the changes to the Dark Dungeon Party Quest, and no one had expected the tragedy that had happened.
I should’ve done something differently. Roy tightened his hands into fists, the tension painful enough to distract him from the sadness welling up behind his eyes. Kaidra didn’t deserve to die that way.
Nessa sat on the ground. She was busy picking at some lint on her shorts, or perhaps she was doing the same thing Roy was trying to do. They couldn’t openly cry. They needed to keep themselves together for Gryphon’s sake. The man looked like he was hanging on by a thread.
Sparky thumbed at his Mage hat, turning its wide brim as if he couldn’t find a decent fit to it.
“I’m sorry about Kaidra,” Roy said.
The party was standing off to the side. Player groups streamed into the lobby, not knowing what horrors could befall them on the Party Quests. A couple of other groups hugged the corners. They looked as haggard as their four-person collective.
“You’re sorry? That’s all you can say? This is your fault!” Gryphon snapped at him. “You should be down on your knees begging for forgiveness.”
“Hey! This isn’t Roy’s fault,” Nessa argued.
“Kaidra’s dead. Don’t you give a damn about her?” Gryphon asked. “Roy should’ve helped her.”
“Of course I do, but you can’t blame Roy for this. If you’re going to blame anyone, blame the new Admin. He screwed up the dungeon.”
“If there’s anyone to blame, it’s you,” Gryphon said. “You were too absorbed with leveling up and getting loot. You knew Kaidra wasn’t ready for this quest, but you pushed ahead acting as recklessly and foolishly as you always do.”
“She chose to go to this dungeon. We all did. Don’t forget that,” Nessa said.
Gryphon threw up his hands. He walked away from the group and sat down, facing a wall.
Sparky tapped Roy on the shoulder. He pointed his thumb towards the exit.
“Wait, don’t go,” Nessa said. “Do you…do you guys want to team up? We weren’t so bad together in the dungeon, you know. There are so many more of them out there and so much more of the game to see. It’s better to see it with people you make a good team with and,” her voice softened, “and we just lost our Brawler. We need you.”
“I don’t think he’d like that,” Roy said, glancing at Gryphon’s back. “He’s pissed.”
“He’s just taking his pain out on everyone. He doesn’t mean it,” Nessa said.
“I feel terrible. I really do. I was right there when it happened.”
“Don’t beat yourself up over it.
