Chapter 9

Later that night Violet lay in Cahl’s bed again, staring up through the darkness at a thatched roof she couldn’t quite make out.

Cahl had spread a blanket on the ground and lay down on it without hesitation. He was already snoring.

Violet didn’t sob, she didn’t give any indication at all that she was crying, but the tears leaked soundlessly from her eyes and tracked down her temples to dampen her hair, and she made no move to stop them. She thought about her mother, and how glad she was at this particular point in time that her mother was gone and wouldn’t worry about her disappearance. She thought about her new found aunts and the rest of her new family and wondered if they’d be too terribly upset if she was never seen again. And finally she thought of her father, her Da as her Aunt Sophie and Aunt Eileen had called him. She wondered if he had any idea this might happen. If perhaps this was what he meant when he said ‘he hoped that she’d spend some time there to figure out where she belonged’. Because in her opinion, he was so very wrong for wanting her to be there if she wasn’t prepared. And no matter what her pride had told her before, she now knew that she wasn’t in the least prepared for what she was now facing. And she was feeling more than a little anger at her aunts for deciding it would be okay.

She turned onto her side and swiped her open hands at her eyes and her face to dry the tears. “Please let me be home when I wake up,” she whispered.
