Adah recalls her first reaction was: “How beautiful!” On the right, within 20 feet of the beginning, is a wall of layered red chert, built up over the last 100 million years. Her second reaction was: “Where did all these houses come from?” What a contrast in age between the 100-million-year-old wall and this new human-made walkway and brick border on the left—all within 20 feet of each other.

Adah’s research also included talking with residents and reading in the main San Francisco Public Library. The quarry work in the early 20th century had intensified the fragility of the steep cliffs, resulting in small rockfalls. The cliffs were not successfully stabilized until after the 1997 landslide. Wire mesh that covers the slope as you walk through Knockash is clearly visible. Although it may be difficult to visualize how it was done, according to records, 99 multistrand, double-corrosion-protected tieback anchors were used, and almost 1,200 linear feet of belt structures went into the design used in the hillside stabilization plan.
