Train crew members were on call for various duties the entire run of the parade. Each year, Edward “Ed” Pope (standing) and an unidentified volunteer washed wagon wheels the Saturday before the parade. The wagons would pick up a lot of dust and dirt while being transported to Milwaukee. The fancy turned spokes were cleaned, and they sparkled under Ed’s meticulous care.

Walter “Walt” Heist was normally the red Mack driver. Here, he has been pulled into costume duty, helping the sway pole artist. It was a tough job, but he had to hang on to the performer’s fancy outer costume while she climbed the ladder to the top of the sway pole. Free acts were common on the parade grounds.
