In the same year [1218], Master Dominic went to Spain, where he founded two houses, one in Madrid, which is now a monastery of nuns, and one in Segovia, which was the first house of the friars in Spain. In 1219 he returned to Paris, where he found a community of about thirty friars. (Libellus, no. 59)

Taking the last sentence to heart, the friars were expanding faster than the impression we may have given; thus Dominic’s visits were needed. Dominic was not the only one recruiting; the friars themselves did so upon their arrival in a new place. Even in Segovia there may have been some friars there before Dominic arrived.
