IT IS RARE and perhaps unique that a single spy could be said to have saved his country from defeat in war. It is barely thinkable, then, that the country’s leader might vilify that spy as an enemy provocateur, leave him to hang, and also to punish—even kill—the intelligence officers who had made that spy’s work possible. Yet all these are realities of Soviet history.

It is also part of history that—decades later—this spy finally came to be honored as a hero in the country he served. Schools and a street in Moscow were named for him, postage stamps were issued with his image; plays and movies were inspired by his story.

This remarkable rehabilitation came about thanks to the happenstance that just before taking a certain job in Moscow, Sergey Kondrashev went to the movies in Vienna one evening late in 1961.
