CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“What time is it?” Sloane snuggled closer to Ryan, not ready to open her eyes.

“Almost two-thirty.” Ryan nestled against her, resting his face on her bare shoulder. “Are you up for a late lunch with Jeri and Alex?”

“Yes. It’d be nice to actually go out to eat lunch. I’m grateful to be able to eat lunch with you anywhere. I didn’t mean-”

“It’s okay. I know what you meant, baby.” The muscles along his jaw line tightened.

Sloane sensed he was about to tell her something bad as she propped herself up. “What’s wrong?”

“Do you remember waking up early this morning. Or having any nightmares?”

“No, why?”

“You woke up, twice, screaming and drenched in sweat.” He caressed her cheek. “I’m not trying to upset you, but you need to tell Dr. Stafford on Tuesday. I know you believe the attack didn’t affect you, but it’s probably causing some post-traumatic stress.”

“I’m having occasional nightmares because it hasn’t been that long since the attack. They’ll stop soon, I’m sure. It’s not like I was raped or in a war. I understand the symptoms of PTSD. I have a degree in psychology, remember?”

“Yes, but it’s harder to recognize the signs in yourself. Promise me you’ll tell her.”

She sighed. “I will.” Maybe. If I feel like it or remember.

After lunch and helping Jeri and Alex load the packed boxes, they spent the rest of the afternoon in bed. In between making passionate love, they chatted about wedding plans, until exhaustion defeated them.

The next afternoon, when Celeste and Tia arrived to pick Sloane up for her bridal shop appointment, Ryan hugged her tighter than usual. “Be careful, please.”

“It’s a boutique. Other than getting scratched by some tulle, I’ll be fine.” Sloane balanced on her tiptoes and gave him a quick kiss. “Unless I have to break up a cat fight over Gabrion. Hey, whatever happened downtown with him the other night?”

Celeste picked at her cuticle. “I made a complete fool of myself. I ended up crying to him about Rob. I was literally sobbing about how he doesn’t want to marry me- right before I barfed all over Gabrion’s loafers.”

Sloane and Celeste erupted into one of their uncontrollable giggle fits. Ryan roared, blotting his eyes.

“We both showed our asses. After Celeste hurled, I made out with this hot cougar. She pushed me against a cocktail table trying to put her hands up my dress.” Tia threw her head back in a bray of laughter. “The next thing you know the fucking table flipped. It had one of those fishbowl drinks on it and Gabrion got soaked in Everclear.”

“Luckily, Gabrion’s such a gentleman. He shared an Uber with us and made sure Tia and I got home safely.” Celeste added.

Tia waved a hand in the air. “Needless to say, our shenanigans got us friend zoned. But he’s an awesome guy to have as a friend.”

“We agreed no more going for the same guy. We should’ve stayed here with you for a low-key night.” Celeste glanced at her watch. “Well, we don’t want to be late.
