Around the House

“I thought it was interesting that you chose not to tell French you actually spotted that white figure twice today,” Sam said. “Why was that?”

Troy finished chewing the last bite of sandwich as the rain beat like fists against the hotel room window, making him glad the drapes were drawn. “I didn’t want to involve the women. What good would it have done?”

“Good thinking.” Sam poured the dregs of his Pepsi down his throat. “Between us, what do you really think you saw? Human or animal?”

Troy sat back and cracked his knuckles. “I think it was human and that it was the same person both times.” He studied his boss. “I’ll tell you, Sam, I love the extra money for this gig, but I can’t wait to get off this damned island.”

“I know what you mean. I’d like to be riding this storm out from home, or from the store.”

“Have you heard from Walt?” He was Sam’s assistant manager at the hardware store.

Sam nodded. “I called him on the landline a little bit ago. They closed early and sandbagged the doors.” He shook his head. “I’m sure glad we had the place reroofed last year.”

Troy grinned. “Yeah. I’m glad you didn’t hire the company who did the roofs here. This place is a sieve.”

“Sure is. French cut corners. At least, except for the weak area above the Antoinette room, the house’s roof seems to be in better shape than the hotel’s.” He glanced at the ceiling. “The hotel’s going to require a lot more work, and I hope that French has the good sense to hire a better contractor. The workers weren’t even using harnesses. Fools. That roofer that had the accident a few weeks ago is lucky to be alive.”

“That was horrible.” Troy was glad he hadn’t witnessed it “Tom Tetto’s even luckier than that guy. Can you believe that he wasn’t even hurt, just shook up?”

“I guess I can,” Sam agreed. “Bless it, though, I would’ve liked to catch sight of him before French took him back to Snapdragon Village. Something about that seems off.”

“It does. The cash he gave us for covering the hole over the bedroom was supposed to be hazard pay, but … I dunno. It sure was a lot.”

“I know. But evidently everything’s fine, so…”

“We should enjoy the money,” Troy finished. “I’m going to buy new fishing gear. You?”

“Probably the same.”

Outside, lightning flashed so bright it lit the drapes. Thunder shook the room, rattling the table.

“Bless it,” said Sam. “This is shaping up to be a helluva storm.”

“How’s Lila doing?” Troy asked. “I mean, does she mind this weather?”

Sam grinned. “Why don’t you ask her yourself?”

Troy shrugged, embarrassed.

“I know you’re sweet on her. She likes you, too.”

Troy blushed.

“For the life of me, I can’t figure out why you two aren’t already dating.”

“You think she’d go out with me?”

“I do.”

“Then maybe I’ll ask her.” Troy remembered Greta, who seemed like the jealous type. “When we get home, I’ll ask.” He crunched his last potato chip, and the sound was lost in an explosion of thunder.
