Around the House
âI thought it was interesting that you chose not to tell French you actually spotted that white figure twice today,â Sam said. âWhy was that?â
Troy finished chewing the last bite of sandwich as the rain beat like fists against the hotel room window, making him glad the drapes were drawn. âI didnât want to involve the women. What good would it have done?â
âGood thinking.â Sam poured the dregs of his Pepsi down his throat. âBetween us, what do you really think you saw? Human or animal?â
Troy sat back and cracked his knuckles. âI think it was human and that it was the same person both times.â He studied his boss. âIâll tell you, Sam, I love the extra money for this gig, but I canât wait to get off this damned island.â
âI know what you mean. Iâd like to be riding this storm out from home, or from the store.â
âHave you heard from Walt?â He was Samâs assistant manager at the hardware store.
Sam nodded. âI called him on the landline a little bit ago. They closed early and sandbagged the doors.â He shook his head. âIâm sure glad we had the place reroofed last year.â
Troy grinned. âYeah. Iâm glad you didnât hire the company who did the roofs here. This place is a sieve.â
âSure is. French cut corners. At least, except for the weak area above the Antoinette room, the houseâs roof seems to be in better shape than the hotelâs.â He glanced at the ceiling. âThe hotelâs going to require a lot more work, and I hope that French has the good sense to hire a better contractor. The workers werenât even using harnesses. Fools. That roofer that had the accident a few weeks ago is lucky to be alive.â
âThat was horrible.â Troy was glad he hadnât witnessed it âTom Tettoâs even luckier than that guy. Can you believe that he wasnât even hurt, just shook up?â
âI guess I can,â Sam agreed. âBless it, though, I wouldâve liked to catch sight of him before French took him back to Snapdragon Village. Something about that seems off.â
âIt does. The cash he gave us for covering the hole over the bedroom was supposed to be hazard pay, but ⦠I dunno. It sure was a lot.â
âI know. But evidently everythingâs fine, soâ¦â
âWe should enjoy the money,â Troy finished. âIâm going to buy new fishing gear. You?â
âProbably the same.â
Outside, lightning flashed so bright it lit the drapes. Thunder shook the room, rattling the table.
âBless it,â said Sam. âThis is shaping up to be a helluva storm.â
âHowâs Lila doing?â Troy asked. âI mean, does she mind this weather?â
Sam grinned. âWhy donât you ask her yourself?â
Troy shrugged, embarrassed.
âI know youâre sweet on her. She likes you, too.â
Troy blushed.
âFor the life of me, I canât figure out why you two arenât already dating.â
âYou think sheâd go out with me?â
âI do.â
âThen maybe Iâll ask her.â Troy remembered Greta, who seemed like the jealous type. âWhen we get home, Iâll ask.â He crunched his last potato chip, and the sound was lost in an explosion of thunder.
