Mama Lucy reflected on her earliest days, her family and her church:

I was taught to cook when I was eight years old by my grandmother. I used to accompany my aunt in cooking for a Caucasian family nearby. One day, my aunt got sick and could not finish preparing the meal. At eight years old, I charmed the family when I boldly exclaimed, “I can cook.” Needless to say, I got the job. Ever since then I have been in the kitchen, cooking up hot meals for my family, friends and strangers too if they were hungry.

I attended the Emery Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, which was established by my family, the Crawfords. This one-room church also served as our schoolhouse. I was not as fortunate as young people in your day. I only received a fifth-grade education because we had to work in the fields from August to October.
